HBO Docs Summer Series kicks off Monday with Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer
Starting Monday, June 10 on HBO it's the kickoff of the Docs Summer Series which runs every Monday for ten weeks. The first up is Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer which is an official selection of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival that received the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Punk Spirit.
This documentary was directed by Mike Lerner & Maxim Pozdorovkin & it's about the feminist art collective Pussy Riot who were arrested & tried for trespassing, wearing “inappropriate” sleeveless dresses and disrupting social order. Nadia, Masha and Katia were accused of religious hatred in a trial that was known worldwide & transformed the face of Russian society.
We see how the ladies battled a system determined to make an example of them through interviews with band members, family & the defense team plus footage of the trial. Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer exposes the state of Russian Justice in modern times while also sharing performances & rehearsals of Pussy Riot shot in & around Moscow. Organizations like Amnesty International plus celebs like Madonna & and Sting spoke out in support of their cause so this is sure to be an interesting & eye opening documentary. Check out the trailer below & check out this video for more about the whole series.
